Does time feel different during a psychedelic session?

Short answer

Yes, many people feel time stretch, blur, or loosen during a psychedelic session, and a small controlled study backs that up. When people were given psilocybin, their sense of longer stretches of time, over roughly two to three seconds, drifted off, while very short intervals stayed accurate.

In 2007, Marc Wittmann, Olivia Carter, Felix Hasler, Franz Vollenweider, and their colleagues published this study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. They set out to test something people had long described but few had measured: does a psychedelic actually change how the brain handles time? Twelve healthy adults took part in a careful double-blind design, which means that on any given session neither they nor the testers knew whether they had received psilocybin or a placebo. Each person worked through a set of timing tasks. In one, they tried to reproduce a time interval they had just been shown. In another, they tapped along in time with a steady beat. In a third, they simply tapped at whatever pace felt natural. The results pointed in one clear direction. Psilocybin threw off timing for longer stretches. People became less accurate at reproducing intervals longer than about two to three seconds, and less able to keep in step with beats spaced more than about two seconds apart. Very short intervals were left largely intact. People also tapped more slowly at their own natural pace. The disruption was specific to the longer durations, the kind that lean on attention and holding a length of time in mind.

What does this mean for you?

If time felt strange during a session, this study is a reason to take that seriously rather than brush it off. Under psilocybin, the way the brain handled longer stretches of time genuinely shifted. So the sense that a few minutes lasted an age, or that the session folded in on itself, is not just a story you told yourself afterward. It lines up with a measurable change in how time was being processed.

It is worth being clear about what this study can and cannot say. It was small, just twelve healthy volunteers, and it was run in a laboratory with timing tasks, not in a therapy room. It measured objective timing, the kind you can score with a stopwatch, more than the full felt texture of a session. And the effect was specific: longer intervals drifted while brief ones held steady. So read it as solid evidence that psilocybin changes time processing, not as a complete map of what your own session felt like.

Still, the direction is steadying. A warped sense of time in a session is a known, expected feature of the experience, not a sign that something went wrong with you. It is tied to the acute state, so it eases as the effects fade. Knowing that in advance can make it easier to let time do what it does, rather than fighting to track the clock. When the strangeness passes, ordinary time comes back.
